Sid the Science Kid and Dive Olly Dive

When the older girls are in school or playing with friends Audra and I tend to leave the TV on a video so we can have some background noise while we color or play. While she isnt actively watching I know she is absorbing information, so I prefer to have educational options. When I was given the opportunity to review this group of Sid the Science Kid and Dive Olly Dive videos, I was excited to add something new to our acceptable educational video collection.

Audra already enjoys Sid the Science Kid but unfortunately it only comes on at a set time so we don't get to see it that often. I love the idea of teaching simple science concepts to children at a young age. Such as gravity, different states such as solid water (ice), liquid water, and gas water (steam)... I think this helps foster a love of science that seemed to be a pretty hated subject when I was in school. I really feel like my daughter benefits from stuff outside the norm of preschool curriculum (ex. Letters, numbers, colors, etc) as she already has a pretty firm grasp of all of these.

The videos I was able to review are:

Sid the Science Kid: The Bug Club

When Sid the Science Kid hears dogs barking in his neighborhood, he wonders if they are talking to him. At school, Sid discovers that animals do communicate in lots of different ways, by using body language, making sounds, and barking! Woof! It’s the latest question in a long list of questions that Sid finds himself wondering about. For example, what makes dirt so dirty? Why do bees live in hives and ants live in anthills? Do leaves actually do anything? Come explore backyard science with Sid in these super duper episodes that feature bugs, nature, animals and more!

Episodes included are:
  • Hello Doggie
  • Home Tweet Home
  • The Dirt on Dirt
  • Don’t Forget The Leaves

Sid the Science Kid: Change Happens

Sid the Science Kid wants to know why things have to change. Why does his yellow banana turn brown? How come his shoes are shrinking? What made his ice pop melt and just how does Grandma know how to make a pancake that is not squishy or burnt? Sid and his friends work together to discover the effects of time, temperature and the environment with the help of some revealing experiments and songs.

Episodes included are:

  • My Mushy Banana
  • My Shrinking Shoes
  • My Ice Pops
  • The Perfect Pancake
Dive Olly Dive! Ship Shape Sub

Olly the submarine is in for a whale of an adventure when he and his friends get together under the sea!

First, Olly, Beth and Skid ignore a warning from Diver Doug when they decide to stay overnight on a “haunted” shipwreck. The friends soon learn that the spooky ship might not be haunted, but it’s still dangerous! In another adventure, Suzy the Sea Plane doesn’t listen to Ranger the Cowboy Seahorse because of his small size. But when Suzy becomes tangled in the Kelp Forest. she learns good things can come in small packages!

In one sub-tastic adventure after another, Olly and his friends learn some valuable lessons, including listening to others and not judging a book by its cover. And one of the most important lessons they discover is to learn from their mistakes!

Episodes included are:

  • Haunted Ship Prank
  • Less is More
  • Navigation Consternation
  • Follow That Lobster
  • Don’t Tell Beth
My daughter and I both really enjoyed these movies, and I was pleased to see Audra engaged with watching these movies. I am really pleased with PBS programming and these shows are yet another star on their record. These have made their way to our "viewing" circulation and I feel confident that this is not junk television. These are lovely videos that any toddler would enjoy and that I recommend to any parent who is looking for something that is eye catching while still being educational!

All three DVDs are distributed by NCircle Entertainment and carry a suggested retail price of $12.99 each. You can catch Sid the Science Kid on PBS Stations nationwide, and Dive Olly Dive on PBS Sprout.

Also, one of my lucky readers have the opportunity to win this same set of videos for their little one!

Now for the rules (yes, rules are tough to live by!):
  • In order to qualify, I need you to post a comment letting me know Your favorite PBS programming.

  • Please don't post " I want to win", "Great Giveaway", etc. that would make me sad because I will have to disqualify you.

  • If you don't have a blogger account, no problem! Just be sure to include your email address!

  • Last, this is very important, you need to include an email address. If you win and you don't have your email in your blogger profile or in your comment, I can't contact you and that will be sad for both of us! (I promise not to sign you up for any spam mail or anything!)
